A relaxing summer respite can be found on Martha’s Vineyard. Accessible by air and boat, the small island was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag, a Native American tribe. When President Obama is here, he just about always prefers his golf rounds be played at Farm Neck Golf Course. This visit five rounds made it onto his calendar during his first week on the island. Good for you Mr. President.
This makes for the President’s sixth annual year visiting the famed vacation destination that is known for being a prime celebrity-sighting spot.
Each year local island residents are keenly aware of his expected arrival. The noticable tightened airport security, plain clothes police on main roads, and the electric anticipation in the air that runs throughout all things on the Vineyard.
This summer, the Obamas visited a bookstore in Vineyard Haven to stack up on some reading materials. The Spotify music lover did not attend the island’s annual Jazz & Blues Summerfest this year, opting instead to listen to the music-streamin service and, go for leisurely walks with his wife, First Lady Michelle, and their lovely daughters.
He played a whole BUNCH of golf and was seen teeing up with professional basketball player Ray Allen, former President Bill Clinton, former NBA player Michael Jordan and Vernon Jordan, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton.
“It was a great experience to be on the same course with the President while he was playing,” said Carlton Mitchell, a Vineyard resident. “The security was very tight coming into the clubhouse; and out on the course his security team kept a golf hole open ahead—and a hole open behind—the President’s foursome. But, we all had a good time out there.” Mitchell also played in the African American Golfer’s Digest 3rd Annual Martha’s Vineyard Golf Classic Getaway that was held on August 13 at Cape Cod Country Club.
Looks like everybody who comes to the Vineyard has a great vacation! Well, Mr. President, let’s see….Same time, next year?
