Nia Station Aiming For Something Special

by Debert Cook

Nia Ann Station plays golf nearly every day in her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.  The 15-year old stands 5’ 7” tall and carries a golf handicap of 6.   It was Nia’s dad , Larry Station, Jr., who first introduced her, at the age of 4, to the sport, hoping that his daughter would become an active player and gain strong citizenship skills.   Little did he know that his child, who loves being engaged with family goings-on, would grow to become the first African American in the history of Nebraska high school to win the state golf title.

Grabbing Lots of Attention

The 10th grader is an excellent student with a 3.84 GPA and enjoys studying algebra, saying, it’s because “it requires logical thinking.” Physically strong, she also has a great right arm that enabled her to finish 7th in the discus at the National Junior Olympics as a middle schooler.  It was afterwards that Nia decided to focus on golf full-time.

At her home golf course, Eagle Run (Omaha, NE) the course is one of Omaha’s most popular golf venues.  Nia honed her skills on its two meticulously maintained nine-hole courses: The Links and The Meadows.

Over the years, Nia devoted herself to practicing there relentlessly and gained an appreciation for the course’s plush fairways and gentle roughs.  As her golfing skills advanced the Meadows course was ideal for perfecting her short game.

Nia has had quite a few private lessons with different coaches.  These lessons, “helped me improve my golf game utilizing different methods. I believe I have gained valuable insights from every golf coach that has taught me,” she says.

“I enjoy the mental challenge of golf. For example, no matter how good or bad a shot that you hit, you must always keep your composure to do well on your next shot.  It really teaches you to keep a level head,” says Nia.

In winning the Nebraska high school girls state championships, Nia took first place (October 2014, Norfolk, NE).  In addition, she won both the District and Metro golf championships for her school district. “The biggest challenge in golf is to play consistently well.  For example, during practice when I hit a good shot, my dad will say, ‘Good shot! Do it again.’  I need to be consistent enough, that I instantly know that I can do that exact same shot on call.”

“I am motivated by my desire to be the best golfer that I can be,” says Nia, who admits, “I also like the feeling of winning tournaments.”

When she’s not on the course practicing, or winning tournaments, Nia adores playing with the family’s pet, a German Schnauzer, named Simba, in addition to reading, playing tennis, listening to music and singing, too.

Nia is a smart, skilled golfer headed in the right direction and whatever she aims for is sure to happen.
