Ron Fuller
(December 19, 2011)–Ronald Fuller, affectionately known as “Ron” by his friends, is retired, after enjoying an active 30-year career at the John Deere & Company, Des Moines Iowa. The former Senior Production Engineer was born in New York City and now resides in Shallotte, N.C.
Ron attended North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro, NC and earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. He also holds numerous technical certifications in his field.
He is the father of two handsome boys, Johnny Jermaine (38) and Ronald Terrance (31). Ron and Johnny play golf together whenever possible and Janice, Ron’s wife of 41-years, also gets in on the action.
Ron’s home course is Brierwood G.C., a golf community located in South Brunswick county, just north of Myrtle Beach, SC. It’s a challenging 6,607 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.
Ron’s initial exposure to the game of golf occurred when a co-worker invited him to join their company golf league back in 1978. The experience was a positive one that captivated him. Now, a dedicated player, he is a member of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and carries a handicap of 21.
“I try to get out to play at least 8-10 times a month with friends,” says the stellar, fit sportsman who has received golf instruction to better his long game.
“Playing is a wonderful experience; it’s challenging, and I enjoy meeting new people.”
At the annual Pioneer Golf Tournament, held at the legendary Clearview Golf Course in East Canton (OH) where Renee Powell (PGA/LPGA) is owner and Head Golf Professional, Ron continues to serve as Co-Host of the weekend fundraiser.
With the economy as recessed as it has been over the years, Ron staunchly realizes the importance of helping to sustain the nations only African American built (1946), owned, operated and managed golf course. Each year the popular outing attracts golfers from all across the country who come to play its well-kept greens, support a great cause, enjoy a delicious banquet, and meet Ms. Powell.
This year, Ron’s golf bag saw even more competitive action when he traveled to several other exciting tournaments including the Mulligan Men’s Golf Tournament (Myrtle Beach, SC) and the Motor City Eagles Tournament (Detroit, MI).
Being active and participating in an exercise regimen on a regular basis is one of the key elements to enjoying a long, healthy lifestyle according to the National Medical Association.
And Ron takes this information to heart, knowing that every round pays great dividends to his body. He makes it a point to get out on the golf course at every opportunity to play reaping the many benefits gained from walking, stretching, bending and especially sweating.
Although many of his golfing buddies may not know it, Ron participated in “Bloody Sunday” (March 7,1965) walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge (Selma, AL) where 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by state and local police with billy clubs.
A firm believer in standing up for human and civil rights, Ron walked from Selma (AL) to Montgomery (AL) on the historic Freedom March. His efforts and dedication to the cause were rewarded when he received the Freedom Diploma from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., James Orange and Rev. Ralph Abernathy.
“Of all of the honorable citations and awards that have been presented to me over the years this is still the one I cherish the highest,” says Ron, a U.S. Veteran, who also holds The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service (Vietnam). When Ron is not golfing the 64-year old satisfies himself by bowling, traveling and tinkering with automobiles.
