About St. Paul AME Church:
The Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is currently located on East Patton Avenue and under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Agnes Lover is leading the charge in coordinating the celebration of the 6th Annual Rosa Parks Holiday in the State of Alabama. In the Spring of 2018, the Alabama legislature passed a bill unanimously to establish Mrs. Rosa Parks Day on December 1st. Mrs. Parks joined St. Paul as a little girl and is widely considered the mother of the modern civil rights movement. She was a member of St. Paul at the first location on Hardaway Street and the second location on Hall Street. While praying in a pew at St. Paul, Rosa Parks had a divine encounter and emerged convinced that it was the Lord’s calling that thrust her into the civil rights struggle; all she had to do was “keep the faith.” On December 5, 1999, St. Paul named its chapel in honor of Mrs. Parks. In October 2005, Mrs. Parks’ body arrived by horse-drawn carriage at St. Paul, where thousands of Alabamians paid tribute. She remained a member until she moved to Detroit after her arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery City bus.
