A driver suspected of being impaired struck a married couple in a golf cart, resulting in the husband’s death, North Carolina officials said, as reported by fresnobee.com. Roy Shane Epps, 58, and his 57-year-old wife were riding in the golf cart when a Chevrolet Malibu collided with them on Saturday, Oct. 12, according to a news release from the N.C. State Highway Patrol. Epps, a resident of Granite Falls, was airlifted to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. His wife sustained life-threatening injuries, troopers confirmed.

The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. in Caldwell County, approximately 75 miles northwest of Charlotte. Investigators reported that Epps was driving the golf cart and attempting to exit a driveway when it crossed into the path of the Malibu. Authorities believe impairment was a factor in the crash and arrested the Malibu’s driver, 33-year-old Cody Lyndon Pennell of Morganton, on a charge of driving while impaired (DWI). Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues in coordination with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office.
