By John F. Merchant
In 1958 John Merchant became the first African American student to graduate from the University of Virginia School of Law and the first African American elected to the USGA Executive Committee. In his book, which represents almost five years of writing to complete, and covers a lot of years, Merchant explores in detail his amazing journey through life, as a man born Black and poor in Greenwich, CT in 1933.
Circumstances exposed him to opportunities to build bridges between the races, make history and change what is to what ought to be during almost eight decades. His insights, opinions and anecdotes are readable, entertaining and offer nourishing food for thought. Merchant makes no claim to being a scholar, an intellectual, a grammarian or a historian, as he embraces that an important journey is well worth taking.
“My book won’t make the NY Times Best Seller list, nor will it generate the same response that a Ludlow, Grisham, Coben, Clancy, et al, novel does, but I hope that you will find something of value in reading it, one or two chapters at a time.” –John F. Merchant. (May 7, 2014)
