Aaliyah Shabazz, an intern and caddie with the Jack Vardaman Workforce Development Program, traveled to Pebble Beach to participate in the prestigious TGR JR Invitational. Held from October 12–14, the tournament brought together 30 boys and 30 girls from across the U.S. to compete at The Links at Spanish Bay and The Hay, a par-3 course renovated in 2021 by TGR Design, Tiger Woods’ firm.

Reflecting on her experience, Aaliyah described the event as both exciting and memorable. She highlighted the camaraderie among participants, starting with the Welcome Reception, where she met like-minded youth golfers passionate about the sport. During the first day of competition at The Hay, Aaliyah noted the course’s challenges and how they fostered friendly interactions and encouragement among players.

On the second day, she competed at The Links at Spanish Bay in a foursome with peers she had bonded with during the earlier rounds. The group shared admiration for the scenic beauty of the sand dunes leading to the Pacific Ocean. Aaliyah described the experience as one of “blissfulness and pure joy,” playing on one of the world’s top courses while surrounded by others who shared her love for golf.  Aaliyah says, “Playing in the TGR JR Invitational was very eventful and thrilling.

Aaliyah’s participation not only showcased her talent and sportsmanship but also highlighted her dedication to the game. Her reflections emphasize the unique blend of competition, connection, and inspiration that events like the TGR JR Invitational foster. She expressed hope to return to Pebble Beach in the future for another such experience.

The Jack Vardaman Workforce Development Program and National Links Trust expressed their glee in their weekly newsletter update, stating they are “proud of Aaliyah’s accomplishments and her representation at this prestigious event.”

The Jack Vardaman Workforce Development Program was launched at Langston Golf Course in 2021, designed to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce. This program equips underserved youth with the tools and skills they need to be ready for future work. It is geared at driving an inclusive economic recovery and close the racial wealth gap. The program ran in two 4-week sessions at East Potomac Golf Links, Langston Golf Course, and Rock Creek Park Golf during the summer. Each program enrollee will have a chance to learn different skills including agronomy, caddying, golf course operations, and tournament administration.

• Opportunity for full-time employment at a course
• Access to the golf industry, which has 2 million jobs and is worth an estimated $84.1 billion
