AFRIYEA Golf Academy in Uganda has officially launched its inaugural Global Golf Mentorship Program, marking a significant step in both sport and social development. Launched on June 18, 2025, the program features 32 mentors from 11 countries, connecting young golfers with experienced professionals across various fields from green keeping and sport psychology to media and business leadership.
The mentors include distinguished figures such as Simon Holmes and Richard Kaufman of Sky Sports; Sarah Bennett, PGA Fellow Professional and former PGA Captain of the UK & Ireland; and Dr. Michael Ryan, an elite performance psychologist based in the UAE. Their international expertise offers mentees access to best practices in coaching, course maintenance, mental preparation, writing, broadcasting, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.
Isaiah Mwesige, CEO of AFRIYEA, emphasized the program’s broader mission beyond technical instruction. “This is more than just golf. It’s a movement to inspire hope, character, and community,” he explained. Mwesige added that the initiative seeks to unite children with storytellers and experts, promoting golf as a medium for personal and communal transformation.
Mentors from around the globe have expressed strong support. Ian McDonald, co-founder of Catch the Light in Scotland, remarked, “Mentorship in golf is long overdue in many regions. AFRIYEA’s approach—rooted in values, social development, education, and international cooperation—is exactly what the game needs”. Jim Ferguson, director at Turnkey Golf in Ireland, stated, “This program is a powerful reminder that golf is not only a sport—it’s a tool for transformation. These young people are not only tomorrow’s golfers, they’re tomorrow’s leaders”.
Delivery is primarily virtual, enabling consistent interaction between mentors and mentees despite geographical boundaries. The program also incorporates guidance on sustainable course management, with experts teaching environment-friendly best practices.
The global mentorship initiative positions Uganda—and East Africa more broadly—as a leading region in golf development. It encourages children from underserved backgrounds and enhances their access to international networks while promoting ethical and sustainable approaches to the game. Isaiah will share his knowledge by participating as a panelist at the 6th Annual African American Golf EXPO & Forum being held January 21 – 24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
AFRIYEA Golf Academy is actively inviting additional mentors to join the program and support its growing network. Those interested can reach out via email to CEO Isaiah Mwesige at isaiahmwesige@gmail.com or through info@afriyeagolfacademy.com.
