If you like golf tournaments with high drama, then you were in for a real treat today at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Akshay Bhatia, who trailed tournament leader Daniel Berger by five shots heading into Sunday’s final round, delivered a comeback victory worthy of significant praise.
After nine holes, Bhatia surged with a brilliant performance, shooting a 31 on the back nine, if I’m not mistaken. It was the first time since 1999 that the Arnold Palmer Invitational had a sudden-death playoff—yes, 27 years ago.
Bhatia is only 24 years old and appears to have a tremendous future ahead of him. He could very well become one of the closest rivals to Scottie Scheffler, as few players have consistently challenged him in recent seasons. The young star seems to possess that special “it” factor—perhaps even a no-choke clause in his arsenal.
Slowly but surely, Bhatia is becoming must-see television, much like many generational talents before him. I’ll pump the brakes just a little for now, but it would not be surprising if, sometime in the not-so-distant future, we see him slipping on a Green Jacket.
Congratulations and kudos to Mr. Bhatia for a magnificent round of golf performed under some very bright lights.
