Teen golf sensation Amari Avery is hanging in there at the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Rockville, Md. Her match status posted as 30 on round 32, going into 2 up for round 64, and tied for 26 in the playoff at +3. (Round one: 77, Round two: 70 for 147 total. See scoring HERE.
As of Thursday, Round of 64 is complete at the 120th U.S. Women’s Amateur and many of the pre-championship favorites are still in the running for the Robert Cox Trophy. Gabriela Ruffels, the 2019 champion, is still alive in her quest to become the first player since Danielle Kang (2010-11) to successfully defend her title, while top-seed Rachel Heck is attempting to become the first medalist to win since Amanda Blumenherst in 2008.

Amari Avery has a strong competitive history as a teen golf prodigy having already shattered a number of Tiger Woods‘ age group records during her younger days, including having had the fastest rise in history up the Rolex AJGA rankings into the “Top 10.” In 2017, the Southern California resident was ranked #438 and ranked #10 as the youngest member of the Top 10 of that time.
On Friday, the U.S. Women’s Amateur field will be reduced from 32 to eight, as patience and stamina will be paramount for the competitors to survive this demanding double-round day to reach the quarterfinals. Golf Channel will broadcast the action at Woodmont Country Club from 1-4 p.m. EDT.
