Just wrapping up qualifying for the third US Senior Women’s Open, golf champion and author Avis Brown Riley placed and tied for 7th place in the event.
“It was an amazing opportunity for me in the Los Angeles area last week,” said the Foundation Boards of Director at Southwestern Community College District.
After 25 years as a FEDEX Operations Manager, Avis is once again pursuing her passion, playing competitive golf and she recently had a wonderful experience competing in the 3rd U.S. Women’s Senior Open qualifying event at Las Posas on June 30, 2021. “It was my 1st time competing in over 15 years, so you can only imagine my mental state, excitement, and joy to be able to compete,” recounted Avis.
“My final score was a 79; the course rating is 74 with fast greens…and I had 2 double bogeys…although others have stated that it was very impressive! My performance at the U.S. Women’s Senior Open qualifying does not reflect my ability, determination, desire, and dedication to perform at the highest level and once again join the winner’s circle.”
Avis is continuously surpassing her dreams. On December 10, 2021, she became the 12th out of 13 African American golfers to become a LPGA lass A Certified Member.
Avis, a cancer survivor, played hard but lost on the playoff on the first hole. “I hit the wedge over the green and ended up bogeying the hole,” she said regrettably. Pushing forward, Avis is not dismayed and is getting ready to register for the LPGA National Championship in Williamsburg, VA. The event is being held at Kingsmill Resort and Avis is seeking a host for her 7-day stay, so any AAGD family and friends interested may contact Avis at 619-862-4914.
