The dramatic opening paragraph of the Author’s Note reads: “Burning Sands, where the weak, weary, and weathered chose to fight or take flight, strive, or simply fall by the wayside.” The sentence basically sums up the contents of this fictional book that you will find hard to put down.
Copyright 2013 by Alfred B. Quarles, Jr. All rights reserved and the author makes a strong note to mention that the work is fiction. “Places, events, and, situations in this story are purely fictional. Any resemblance to any organization, event, or actual persons, living or dead, is unintentional and coincidental.” And, rightly, its a smart move, since much of the activity could resemble persons from another place and time.
Unveiled in the read are details of a band of brothers, linked together by fraternal organizational ties, long-standing familiarity of themselves, as they grow from boys to men during a time of self-discovery and collegiate accomplishment. Nothing is missed or overlooked during the transition of their years: music, money, athletics, relationships, and of course just hanging out with the fellas. Men of fraternal allegiance will recognize much of this story, a mirror reflection of perhaps the scenarios that have penetrated their own lives as part of the “order”. Pledging, Hazing, Skating. All of these are a part of the intrigue that takes place between the pages of the book, as a deluge of activity surrounds the pledging the fictitious Phi Lambda Tau.
