November 8, 2019 — Carl Mayes was born in Cleveland, Ohio, The Rock and Roll Capital of the World. Today, the 37-year-old resides in sunny Sanford, Florida where the grass under his feet is green and almost never-ending. “Young and ambitious, while out looking for a summer job when I was in high school, I found a country club that offered a caddie program for the summer,” recalls Carl. Thus was his introduction to the sport that would take him on to a passionate career path. After earning his A.A.S. Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from the University of Akron he embarked on making a life for himself that he could be proud of.
Today, Carl is a Certified Caddie and a member of the Professional Caddie Association (PCA). Carl plays at a golf handicap of 12 and he is able to play any of the many courses which he works on. He stays busy on the golf course but also coaches, shares his positive outlook on life as a motivational speaker and organizes special programs focused on yoga stretches and breathing techniques. He has been a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. for 14 years and has participated as a member of Rites of Passage Ministries for 7 years, an organization that mentors young men.
“I have been productive in starting up a business. The company name is pURPOSE9, a custom self-affirmation t-shirt business. The primary focus is to make you consciously aware of the greatness inside of you, through self-affirmations,” says Carl, whose products in the line can be found and purchased on his Instagram page @purpose9_.
“I motivate and coach customers to improve themselves and to address obstacles that are limiting success, says the yoga enthusiast. “I am honest and I offer a high level of performance in customer service–I inspire my clients to BE GREAT!” And, his list of clients is impressive. He’s given instruction to doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, company presidents, CEOs and many others who have sought him out to better their golfing skills.
TURNING CHALLENGE INTO OPPORTUNITY
Sharing his biggest challenge with teaching and coaching, Carl admits, “Having clients build trust with me, as I give them advice on where to hit the ball, especially on the green. If the client doesn’t trust you they won’t listen to you.” Carl aims to lessen this challenge by approaching it with a positive attitude and asking his clients the right questions to build a trusting relationship.
“I enjoy traveling. A few places that I have been are Aruba, Alaska, Panama, Dominican Republic, Vancouver, Bahamas and Cancun,” he says. Up next on his list of hopeful destinations are Hawaii, Thailand, Bali and Brazil, and a couple of cruises.
Items on his 5-year plan list include:
- Continue to find ways to live healthier, so that I am able to respect my mind, body and soul.
- Creating more discipline in the gym and my life.
- Work on my relationship daily with God and my fiance’
- Continuing to grow to become a better caddie and golfer.
