John Charles Jordan Sr., a former Par Busters Golf Group member, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. He was born on June 23, 1945, in Charlotte, N.C. and is reunited with his deceased father, John Julius Jordan, his mother, Ealer Jordan-Barrett, younger brother, Billy Jordan, nephew, Jeffrey Burnett and several dearly departed Aunts.
John Jordan spent his adolescence in Greensboro, NC before coming back to spend his senior year at West Charlotte High School. He graduated in 1963 and was a proud Lion and active member of the West Charlotte Alumni Breakfast Club and volunteered frequently to support their annual golf tournament.
Charles was a third-generation entrepreneur and moved to Washington, D.C. during his early 20s to work for father and together they built one of the “largest Black-owned roofing company” in the Greater Metropolitan area. In 1968, he started his first business, J. Charles Jordan and Associates, and won several awards and much recognition.
After returning to Charlotte, he launched his development company, JCJ Properties. His masterpiece project was the creation of his family neighborhood – Yvonne Lane (named after his eldest sister), where he built homes for his mother, life partner, and extended family and sold houses to several others.
“Chaz” Jordan taught himself to play golf and became a scratch golfer whose skill earned him a TIMETE NEW YEAR sponsorship by Coors Beer company. He won U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and frequently traveled the country to play golf alongside some of the world’s best Black golfers including his great friend Murphy Street, Earl Woods (Tiger’s Father), and Lee Elder first Black golfer to play in a Masters tournament.
“Biggie,” as he was affectionately known (and called others), custom-built his personal golf haven in Pinehurst, N.C. Greater Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church was his church home. He was a member of the Senior ministry. His walk with God was strengthened after being brought through and healed of two life-threatening heart strokes. John Jordan Sr. was a good man; rich in love and beautiful relationships.
He is survived by his partner in life and love for over 32 years, Carolyn Moore; his Uncle and lifelong Dominoes challenger, Walter “Pete” Jordan; his sisters-Yvonne, Celestine, and Julia Jordan; nephew, Stephen Burnett.
He was a proud father to his namesake son, John Charles Jordan Jr. “Papa Charles” deeply cherished living down the street from his God-given daughter Alisa (Greg) Craig and grandchildren Brandon, twins Darran and Darius, and Danielle. He leaves a host of cousins, extended family, and friends to cherish his memory. May he Rest in Peace and Power!
Charles lived in Greensboro, NC and Washington, DC before moving back to his hometown of Charlotte, NC.
Visitation was scheduled for 11:30am to 12:30pm on Monday December 12, 2022 at the Greater Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church, 727 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC 28202. The memorial service begin immediately afterward, at 12:30pm.
