Limb compression has been used in medicine for decades as one of the ways to treat patients with extremity swelling and/or venous disease.
Lately, there has been an increasing interest in applying the benefits of compression for use in enhancing athletic performance, particularly with compression socks.
Although athletic compression is not as “tight” as medical grade compression, it still retains the majority of those benefits.
To be truly effective, compression must be graduated or gradient. This means that the relative tightness of the compression garment is maximal farther out on the extremity and tapers gradually as it progresses more centrally.
A review of research trials, the literature, and personal anecdotal perceptions supports the validity of the benefits of properly constructed compression wear in providing comfort, enhanced performance and improved post-exertional recovery
Improvements with the use of compression wear occur because of a combination of specific benefits:
- Improved drainage of blood and tissue fluid which decrease limb swelling and heaviness thus diminishing extremity fatigue with prolonged standing
- Increased extremity tissue oxygenation by improving limb blood flow
- Increased clearance of post-exertional metabolites (such as lactic acid) during recovery
- Stabilization of muscles diminishes muscle fiber vibration and reduces exercise-induced muscle inflammation and damage thereby decreasing post-exertional muscle discomfort and delayed onset muscle soreness
All of the above-listed benefits of compression combine to create an overall favorable personal perception regarding one’s extremity effort, exertional performance, recovery and wellness.
The medical benefits of compression have been well established and these benefits have now enhanced the performance, symptom relief and recovery for those healthy individuals whose lifestyles require prolonged standing and/or strenuous exertion.
