Danielle Spencer, best known for playing the sharp-witted younger sister Dee Thomas on the classic television sitcom What’s Happening!!, died August 11, 2025, at age 60 after a long battle with cancer.
Spencer rose to national fame as a child actress in the mid-1970s when she was cast as Dee Thomas, the sarcastic and outspoken little sister of Raj on What’s Happening!! The show aired on ABC from 1976 to 1979 and became one of the first television series to center on the lives of African American teenagers. Spencer’s quick comedic timing and memorable catchphrase—often threatening to “tell Mama”—made her one of the show’s most beloved characters.
She later reprised the role when the series returned in the 1980s as the sequel show What’s Happening Now!!, which aired from 1985 to 1988. While she appeared in fewer episodes during the revival, fans still remembered her as one of the standout performers from the original series.
Spencer’s life was marked by both triumph and adversity. In 1977, during the height of the show’s popularity, she was involved in a devastating car accident that killed her stepfather and left her in a coma for three weeks. She suffered multiple injuries and spent months recovering, yet she eventually returned to the screen and continued working.
After her years in Hollywood, Spencer chose a different path. Inspired by a lifelong love of animals, she pursued higher education and eventually earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 1993. She went on to build a respected career as a veterinarian, practicing in California and later in Richmond, Virginia.
Even while working as a veterinarian, Spencer occasionally returned to the entertainment world. She appeared in television programs and even played a veterinarian in the 1997 film As Good as It Gets. In addition, she authored a memoir reflecting on her life as a child star and her journey through personal challenges.
In her later years, Spencer faced a series of health struggles, including breast cancer and complications stemming from earlier injuries. Despite these obstacles, friends and colleagues remembered her as resilient, kind, and deeply compassionate.
Danielle Spencer leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond television. She will be remembered not only for the laughter she brought to audiences as Dee on What’s Happening!!, but also for her dedication to helping animals and her remarkable ability to overcome adversity with strength and grace.
