After witnessing many beer-drinking fans at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week at Bay Hill (many of whom were not in total compliance with the mask-wearing protocol) I couldn’t help but realize how much America’s double standard policy still exists.
I thought about something that has always fascinated me and that is how thousands of intoxicated, young, and middle-aged golf fans can shout, holler, scream, and display an enormous, blatant, disregard for the games integrity when they create a ruckus at the Waste Management Tournament every year out at TPC Scottsdale, at the famed 16th hole. Very reminiscent of early Roman gladiators competing in an arena — they seem to be calling for blood every time a golfer attempts his tee shot on the famous par 3.
For some strange reason over the years this conduct and behavior has been accepted as classy and innovative. I often wonder what would be the outcome if 90% of those fans were Black or brown? It takes me back to the recent onslaught on our Nation’s Capital on January 6th. The double standard appears more obvious with each passing year. Who and Where are the enforcers and Why aren’t they the Gate Keepers that they’re supposed to be? Inquiring minds want to know?
