In 2018, I had the profound honor of witnessing history with Renee Powell at St. Andrews, Scotland — the Home of Golf — as Powell Hall was named in recognition of her family’s enduring legacy. To stand on those sacred grounds and watch her be celebrated was unforgettable. It was more than a moment; it was a “milestone in the story of the game itself.”
When the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) presented Renee at the 2026 PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, with their Merit Award, the association’s most prestigious honor, the room rose in two separate standing ovations. It was a powerful tribute to a woman whose family and life’s work has shaped the game through courage, leadership, and unwavering dedication. Renee humbly accepted the award onstage surrounded by Cathy Harbin, owner, Pine Ridge Golf Course and Jay Karen, CEO, National Golf Course Owners Association.
The Merit Award recognizes individuals who have made significant, long-term contributions to the game of golf. Renee Powell’s impact spans generations. From Clearview’s fairways to the global stage, her legacy continues to inspire and uplift. Now, we gather to celebrate that legacy — and the enduring spirit of the Powell Family. Powell joins past recipients such as Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Lee Trevino.
