In 2023, a total of $750,000 in funding was awarded to 82 grassroots golf organizations, charitable groups, or programs dedicated to increasing golf participation among those underrepresented in the sport. These grants were provided through the Make Golf Your Thing initiative, an industry commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in golf to create a more inclusive environment for all individuals.
Michael Cooper, USGA Senior Advisor HBCU Initiative and Co-Chair of the grants committee confirmed that grants will be available in 2024, with the application process commencing in January and awards announced in May.
Since the inception of the grant program, it has supported 237 grants benefiting 137 distinct grassroots organizations, with a cumulative funding of over $1.8 million. This funding history includes grants awarded in May 2021 (43 grants totaling $150,000), January 2022 (31 grants totaling $150,000), June 2022 (81 grants totaling $750,000), and May 2023 (82 grants totaling $750,000). The program’s primary goal is to assist organizations dedicated to increasing participation among underrepresented populations in golf, including Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous communities, women, LGBTQI+ individuals, veterans, and those with disabilities.
Jay Monahan, the Commissioner of the PGA TOUR and executive sponsor of the Make Golf Your Game initiative within Make Golf Your Thing, has emphasized “the importance of integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into the fabric of the game”. He noted that this task is challenging and requires active participation from all involved. Monahan also highlighted how the collective efforts of the industry have had a positive impact on communities, showcasing the difference that can be made when everyone works together.
