Edward Waters University, a historically Black college in Jacksonville, Florida, has relaunched its women’s golf team into its athletics program thanks to a $50,000 donation from the The Players Championship. The team is being led by Kelly Allen, affectionately known as “Coach K,” a former collegiate player and champion with over 20 years of golf experience.
Coach K is looking for dedicated, hardworking, and disciplined young women who are interested in making history by becoming part of the rebooted women’s golf team. The program had ended in 2015 due to funding and recruiting issues.
“I am very grateful to be in the position that I am in to lead you all and have committed my life to bringing this program as much value as possible. With my primary goal to always strive to expand on our resources. This includes more golf courses for practice, equipment deals, coaching staff, and more!” said Coach K.
However, the program is more than just a platform for athletic success. Coach K sees it as an opportunity for young women to network and cultivate their professional careers. The team has already formed relationships with several organizations, including the PGA TOUR, Grant Thornton, USGA, Women of Color Golf, and several other organizations. A few of the school’s players have already earned internship opportunities as they transition towards graduation.
The team has 3+ openings for the 2023 fall season for qualifying applicants, and interested candidates are encouraged to submit their resumes through Playcollegegolf.net. Please direct questions to Darren Horrell at Darren@playcollegegolf.net.
As the head coach, Coach K is committed to bringing as much value as possible to the program. He has built many valuable relationships in the golf industry and the Jacksonville area, which he hopes to leverage to expand the program’s resources. This includes securing more golf courses for practice, equipment deals, coaching staff, and more.
