On October 30, high school golfers from Drew Charter School in Atlanta, Ga., will get an exclusive glimpse into the world of professional golf. Bridgestone and Bridgestone Golf are teaming up to welcome students to the Bridgestone Golf headquarters in Covington, Ga., for a behind-the-scenes look at golf ball research & development, a chance to hit balls with golfers from Morehouse College at the company’s driving range, and a custom ball fitting for each Drew Charter athlete.
The Drew Charter School immersion is a component of the Bridgestone Collegiate Development Program, which launched this year as part of the PGA TOUR’s Pathway to Progression to achieve greater diversity in golf through increased focus on developing talent from historically underrepresented groups.
The event also helps commence the inaugural Bridgestone HBCU Invitational taking place November 1-2 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga. The 54-hole team and individual stroke play event will include 10 HBCU men’s golf teams and five HBCU women’s golf teams, with the winning teams earning a two-day development camp at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, home of THE PLAYERS Championship. Before competition begins, players will also participate in a “Pathway to My Career” panel featuring leaders from Bridgestone, PGA TOUR, ESPN, Black Sports Business Academy, Atlanta Hawks, Creative Artists Agency, Mutual of Omaha and more.
Drew Charter School and The Georgia High School Association Athletics are dedicated to providing their students with a robust and competitive athletics program. All of the athletics offered encourage and facilitate teamwork, cooperation, and leadership, which is believed to offer the students a platform for success at school and beyond in their lives.
In only its sixth year as a high school, Drew Charter School‘s Senior Academy has earned a reputation as a strong sports competitor, having already secured three state championships in Georgia: the 2015 Boys Cross Country Class A Public Division State Championship, the 2017 Girls Tennis Class A Public Division State Championship, and the 2019 Boys Class A Public Division Golf State Championship.
