First Tee – Tampa Bay is in the process of constructing a 9-hole short course and a dedicated practice area at Rogers Park Golf Course. The organization has scheduled a grand opening event with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, set to take place on Monday, October 30th, 2023, at 10:00 am. Everyone is cordially invited to attend this significant occasion.
Established in 1952, Rogers Park Golf Course is a hidden gem in Tampa, Florida. This picturesque 18-hole golf facility is not just a course; it’s a testament to history and heritage.
Golfers of all skill levels can embark on a tranquil adventure at this course, ensuring a fantastic golfing experience. Located a mere 20 minutes from downtown Tampa, Tampa International Airport, and the breathtaking beaches of Tampa Bay, this 160-acre golf haven is uniquely bordered on three sides by the Hillsborough River, offering a serene escape from the urban hustle and bustle. Rogers Park Golf Course proudly hosts the Tampa City Men’s Open Championship and boasts one of Tampa’s top-notch driving ranges. Moreover, the inclusion of a 3-hole short game course provides a distinct golfing experience found nowhere else in the area.
Delays held up the completion of the new par 3 golf course that was scheduled to open last fall. Executive Director of First Tee of Tampa Bay Ian Baxter told Bay 9 News this past June, “Rains from Hurricane Ian last year washed away seeds that had already been planted, then winter hit. Cooler temperatures generally slow down the growth of new grass.”
Rogers Park holds historical significance as it served as the sole picnic area for the African-American community in Tampa during the era of segregation. It was named after its benefactor, G.D. Rogers. Families from all around would gather here on Sundays after church to enjoy the swings, slides, baseball diamond, and picnic spots. Mayor Curtis Hixon granted permission to a group of caddies from Palma Ceia Country Club to construct a 9-hole golf course. Under the guidance of the inaugural Head Golf Professional, Willie Black, this dedicated team of volunteers meticulously shaped the course, managing all tree removal by hand. In 1952, with unwavering determination, the Rogers Park Golf Club was officially born.
Upon the course’s official launch, First Tee – Tampa Bay will introduce a novel program known as The Short Course Club, said a Facebook post by influential golfer Charlene Williams. “This initiative aims to engage young golf enthusiasts, particularly those in the age group of 8-12, who are transitioning from group lessons but are not yet prepared for the full-sized golf course. Think of it as a ‘Junior Varsity’ Team for budding golfers. The program spans seven weeks, mirroring the organization’s existing Saturday programming.”
“The program’s first week is scheduled to commence on Saturday, November 4th. The organizers are seeking volunteers to accompany a group of four kids on the Short Course, ensuring they maintain a consistent pace, adhere to golfing rules, and prioritize safety. Volunteers will be expected to commit to one session per week for seven consecutive Saturdays, with time slots available from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. To participate as a volunteer, candidates will be required to complete a criminal background screening and complete a series of online video training modules before they begin their service.”
According to Williams, the organizers understand that circumstances may change throughout the year, but they are making efforts to secure volunteer slots well in advance, ensuring readiness when the time arrives. Please find below the Short Course Club schedule for the upcoming six months:
