The Golf Club of Dallas

by AAGD Staff

The Golf Club of Dallas, originally established in 1954 as Oak Cliff Country Club, has long been a cornerstone of Dallas golf. Once the home of the Byron Nelson Classic, the course hosted legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Lee Trevino, embedding itself into Texas golf history. In 2020, the course transitioned to ownership under Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, led by Dr. Tony Evans, ensuring that this historic venue would continue to serve both the golfing community and the broader neighborhood. The stewardship combines respect for tradition with a vision for inclusivity, making it one of the more unique golf properties in North Texas.

The club’s signature hole is the par-3 13th, a beautiful test that requires a precise tee shot over water to a green protected by bunkers. It is as visually striking as it is challenging, and many golfers call it the highlight of their round. The toughest par 4 is arguably the 9th, a long, uphill hole with a narrow fairway and a well-protected green. It requires two solidly struck shots to have any chance at par, testing even the most skilled players.

Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green, and short-game areas, offering golfers the chance to refine every aspect of their game. The clubhouse, though traditional in style, provides a welcoming environment with a pro shop and food service. Weekly leagues, tournaments, and events foster a sense of community, with members consistently praising the friendly and accessible atmosphere.

Affordability remains one of The Golf Club of Dallas’s strengths, with competitive membership rates and opportunities for guest play. While some note that the clubhouse could benefit from modernization, the overall experience is anchored by consistently good course conditions and a staff dedicated to hospitality. Maintenance closures on Tuesdays ensure that the course remains in top playing shape year-round.

The course itself, a par-70 championship layout measuring just under 6,720 yards, was designed by noted architects Perry Maxwell, Press Maxwell, and Charles Coody. Their work produced a parkland-style course that rewards accuracy and course management over raw power. Towering oaks frame narrow fairways, and well-placed bunkers guard landing areas and greens. The rolling terrain adds challenge and character, while water hazards come into play on several holes. Greens are known for being smooth and quick, demanding a steady putting stroke.

Blending history, challenge, and community spirit, The Golf Club of Dallas continues to stand out as both a historic gem and a vibrant gathering place for golfers of all levels.
