It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of golfing legend James Black, who departed this world on Thursday afternoon at Novena Critical Care Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 81 years old. Mr. Black had been on life support for over a month following three strokes, according to James Black’s son, George Black, who confirmed the news of his father’s passing.
The golfing community mourns the loss of a true icon, as James Black was not only an exceptional athlete but also one of the smartest minds in the game of golf.
Sports Agent, Arthur Johnson, a close friend of James Black along with several other Black golf legends, including the late Ted Rhodes, Peete Brown, Charlie Sifford, and Lee Elder, expressed his admiration, stating, “Mr. Black was one of the smartest men that I knew in the game of golf and that I have ever been associated with.”
The commemoration of the life of James Black, a distinguished Professional Golfer, will take place on Friday, July 14 at the United House of Prayer for All People, located at 2321 Beatties Ford, Charlotte, NC 28216. The viewing will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 p.m., followed by the memorial service, which will commence at 12:00 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by Alexander Funeral Home, Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC. James Black’s prowess in the sport of golf was remarkable, with numerous victories on the United Golf Association (UGA) tour, which served as the primary platform for Black players for many decades. Throughout his career, he also had 11 starts on the PGA Tour, showcasing his skills and winning multiple times on the UGA Tour.
While many recognize Tiger Woods as the first Black professional golfer to score a 67 in the first round of his first tournament, it was James Black who accomplished this feat at the age of 21 during the 1964 L.A. Open. Despite being a self-taught caddy and child prodigy, he finished in the top 10 that week, solidifying his ability to compete at the highest level of the game—an opportunity that had been denied to many Black players at the time.
Furthermore, James Black holds the distinction of being the only African American golfer to win the Negro Junior, Amateur, and Professional titles in UGA events. His impact on the game of golf and his trailblazing achievements will forever be remembered.
In 2022, James Black celebrated his special 80th birthday at the Charlie Sifford Golf Course in Charlotte, NC. Organized by Dyrrle Osborne, Black was surrounded by friends and admirers and the day was filled with joy and camaraderie. “Everything went well, and James was in good spirits,” shared Dyrrle in a previous interview.
“The golfing world has lost a true legend in James Black,” said Debert Cook, African American Golfer’s Digest publisher. “His contributions to the game and his pioneering spirit will continue to inspire generations to come. As we mourn his passing, let us remember the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
