About the Preserve Shady Rest Committee:
The Preserve Shady Rest Committee is a dedicated group of local residents and passionate supporters committed to preserving the rich history of the Shady Rest Golf and Country Club. This historic establishment holds a unique place in history as the first African American-owned and operated country club in the United States.
Established in 2013, the Committee has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the historical significance of Shady Rest Golf Club among Scotch Plains residents and fellow New Jerseyans. Their efforts have included advocating for building improvements through participation in local council meetings, petitioning the New Jersey Historical Society for state landmark recognition, and hosting various educational events.
At the core of the Committee’s mission is a commitment to educating the public about the rich history of Shady Rest and John Shippen, Jr., preserving and restoring the Shady Rest Clubhouse, and creating a multi-purpose center and museum. This center will showcase a wealth of memorabilia, photographs, artifacts, and oral histories of Shady Rest, offering an informative and engaging space open to the public and future generations.
Join the Preserve Shady Rest Committee for a night of celebration and support their noble cause while enjoying a “Night of the Blues” at Shady Rest Country Club.
