Happy Birthday Renee Powell, Trailblazer and Advocate for Golf

by AAGD Staff

Today, we at the African American Golfer’s Digest wish to celebrate the birthday of golfing legend Renee Powell, who has made tremendous contributions to the sport and the community. As the Head Golf Professional at Clearview Golf Course, Renee has been an inspiration to countless golfers around the world.

Born on May 4th, 1946, in East Canton, Ohio, Renee Powell is the daughter of William and Marlene Powell, both of whom were loving parents, guiding Renee in the direction of personal and professional success. Renee was introduced to golf at a young age and soon became passionate about the sport. She honed her skills under the tutelage of her father, who was the first African American to build, own, and operate a golf course in the United States.

Renee’s talent and dedication soon caught the attention of the golfing world. In 1967, she became the second African American woman to compete on the LPGA Tour. She went on to win the 1973 Kelly Springfield Open and was a member of the 1976 U.S. Curtis Cup team. In addition to her achievements on the course, Renee has also been a tireless advocate for diversity and inclusion in golf. In 2015, she was awarded the PGA of America’s First Lady of Golf Award in recognition of her contributions to the game.

Renee’s passion for golf extends beyond her own achievements. In 2001, she became the Head Golf Professional at Clearview Golf Course in East Canton, Ohio, the course that her father built. Clearview Golf Course is the first golf course in the United States to be designed, built, owned, and operated by an African American. Renee has dedicated herself to preserving her father’s legacy and ensuring that Clearview Golf Course remains a beacon of diversity and inclusion in the golfing community.

On this special day, we wish Renee Powell a very happy birthday and express our gratitude for her countless contributions to the world of golf. Her achievements on the course and her advocacy for diversity and inclusion have inspired generations of golfers around the world.
