Things can quickly spiral out of control during a major tournament championship and that’s exactly what happened to Tour player Harold Varner III. In Sunday’s final round of the PGA Championship, Varner found himself in a situation from which he would not recover.
In the anchor pairing, Varner played alongside Brooks Koepka with three rounds of steady play, entering the finale at Bethpage at 5 under, seven shots off the lead. He got to within five after a clinical dissection of the opening hole, combining a birdie with a bogey from Koepka.
Unfortunately, this would be the limit for Varner. He bogeyed No. 3 before disaster struck on the par-5 fourth. His drive pulled hard into the thick rough, next his second wayward shot found went bounding into trees. The result was a lost ball. More heartache followed when he made a double bogey and was unable to facilitate another birdie the rest of the way. Varner signed off on an 11-over 81, dropping him into a tie for 36th.
