How Tiger and son Charlie saved the PNC Championship

It would just not be the same at this year’s PNC Championship without this duo. Tiger and son Charlie will be a focus for many fans at this week’s 25th contesting of the PNC Championship. The annual 36-hole team event, of father’s paired with their sons (or a family member), will bring together 20 winners of outstanding golf titles in a scramble competition.

Unfortunately, because of the lack of sponsorship the PNC event wasn’t played from 2009-2011. The event was not even brought back until IMG and Arnold Palmer made the point to convince the powers that be at the Pittsburgh-based PNC to revive the championship.

But what really saved the event was participation by Tiger and Charlie, who finished second as a team a year ago and, for the third time, are scheduled to play together this weekend at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando. The pairing sealed the deal for the hand-off of the event from Arnold to Jack to Tiger as the top draw of the event.

Some fans and pros conclude that Charlie is actually the bigger draw for the Championship, while many are excited to see Tiger in competition again, seeing a young man develop in the sport who is the son of a golf icon is even more exciting.

“This is the first tournament I’ve ever played in that Tiger Woods is playing in that he’s not the star of the show,” Harrington said.

Tiger must be smiling ear-to-ear inside, knowing that little Charlie is doing so well as a youngster.

“Charlie will just hit all the shots and I’ll just get the putts out of the hole,” Tiger said at the Hero World Challenge.

Now, all of a sudden, the PNC has turned into must-see TV each December.
