College golfer JR Smith of the NCA&T Aggies had a rough start to his first Division I NCAA golf tournament on this past Monday, and failing to keep the ball in the fairway kept him trying harder with each stroke.
The former NBA player’s career as a college golfer officially began with the first two rounds of this Elon Phoenix Invitational in Burlington, North Carolina. After a solid start to his first round, things unraveled a bit on his way to an opening 83, which he followed up with a 78 in the second round later in the afternoon.
On Tuesday, Smith was back on course for third round action with the North Carolina A&T Aggies, starting his day on the back nine. Smith made par on his first two holes of the day before arriving at the 12th hole where disaster struck in the form of a yellow jacket attack after he stepped on a nest,
Smith hit a ball off line and ended up in the woods, where he ended up being stung by some yellow jackets during his round this morning. He had to get medical treatment but was able to finish his round.
The former NBA player served 16 seasons on the court where he was not stung by wildlife, only by his teammates.
