The second Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay brought together nearly 4,000 of the continent’s top youth athletes across 42 sports, and golf made its debut on the schedule, offering a new stage for rising talent. Amid challenging conditions, two young Jamaicans—Mattea Issa and Trey Williams—delivered standout performances that showcased their grit and potential.

The golf competition, held at the Asunción Golf Club, proved grueling. Players endured seven consecutive days of play, and two competition days required completing 27 holes, August 18 to August 23. On the final day, competitors faced bitterly cold winds with temperatures as low as 13 degrees Celsius. Despite the harsh weather, Mattea Issa, the reigning Caribbean Junior champion, made an electrifying start. She led outright after the first two rounds with consecutive rounds of 75, demonstrating calm precision under pressure. Though a stormy third day saw her score rise to 88, Issa rallied to finish seventh overall. The experience of leading internationally, she reflected, validated her progress and revealed her future promise.

Trey Williams also performed admirably. With consistent rounds of 82, 80, and 82, he ultimately finished in 25th place. He described the experience as unforgettable, likening it to an Olympic moment and valuing the chance to compete against the best junior golfers from across North and South America.

Their efforts amid such adversity speak volumes about the future of golf in Jamaica. Despite difficult weather and physical demands, both athletes displayed resilience and professionalism. Their presence and performance signal that Jamaican golf has bright days ahead.

The Junior Pan American Games proved to be a valuable proving ground. For a young nation with a vibrant sporting culture, performances like these underscore the potential within its next generation of golfers. More than just scores, their journey reflects confidence and growth, setting the stage for higher aspirations and more international representation in the years to come.
