As an African American and professional golfer during the late 1950s and ’60s, Black has witnessed enough racism to last several lifetimes. His journey in the sport has taken him through many ‘back doors’ out yonder, over there, and other places where those of his skin’s hue were sent when unwelcomed in certain places.
Yes, he has slept in his car. too, not because he wanted to, but because hotels did not accommodate Blacks at the time. He’s also been turned away from many golf courses and refused to be let to play. What a time he has witnessed. In this candid, cordially conducted interview, Black shares almost an hour with Publishers, Debert Cook of the African American Golfer’s Digest and Aziz Gueye Adetimirin, publisher of The Network Journal during the dinner hour of a golf tournament held in his honor in Westbury, NY in 2014.
