Bethel Resort Inn Celebrates 100 Years
Bethel Inn and Resort located in Western Maine, 70 miles west of Portland, Maine. The Resort opened in 1913 by Dr, John George Gehring. Dr. Gehring’s patients would reside at Bethel Inn for three-to-four months while being treated for mental disorders.
The Inn has flourished over the past 33 years, growing in size from 100 acres to 200 acres, expanding from 60 guest rooms to 150.
The Millbrook tavern is a perfect place to unwind, watch TV, play pool and listen to live music on weekends while enjoying a few cocktails.
Amenities include 18-hole golf course, health club and spa, conference center, tennis courts, heated outdoor pool and mountain bike rental.
Other activities for off site discoveries: ATV adventure, fly fishing, canoeing and kayaking, white water rafting, moose and wilderness safaris and horseback riding.
During the winter activities vary from cross country skiing on site and downhill skiing at Sunday River Ski slopes located nearby. If you are looking for adventure, this is the place to go. (http://www.bethelmaine.org)
DINING
On Fridays, Saturdays and Holidays enjoy sumptuous meals in the elegant dining room overlooking Maine’s White Mountains. Onsite the Millbrook tavern and grille serves a bountiful breakfast, lunch and dinner. I enjoyed a delicious, tongue-tingling Mexican dinner on Thursday—I was politely advised beforehand, that, if I couldn’t take the ‘heat’, I might wish to consider ordering off of the regular menu.
In 1987, Geoffrey Cornish, the renowned golf course architect redesigned the 9-hole golf course to an 18 hole championship course.
The course ranges from 5500 yards to 6700 yards with five sets of tees. Hole #3 measures 135 yards from the white tees with a dam serving as a water hazard, and bunkers guarding the left and right sides of the green. This hole has been called “The Best Damn Hole” in New England! Located right on site at the course is the Guaranteed Performance School of golf. The school offers 2, 3, and 4 day programs with a 3:1 teacher to student ratio.
For people on the East Coast, Mine is an adventurous and affordable destination. For more information on Bethel Inn and Resort visit the website www.bethelinn.com
