The Bump and Run, a versatile greenside shot to have in your bag that can be executed with a 7-, 8- or 9-iron depending on your lie and distance from the hole. It’s a stroke that looks just like its name sounds. Here’s the LPGA’s Jocelyn Jones, a frequent provider of instruction for the PGA Women’s Clinics presented by AIG, to show you how it’s done. How to Hit a Bump and Run with Jocelyn Jones 1) I use my 9-iron. 2) My set up is compact, low and tight. 3) I turn my body toward the target. This helps me get my shoulders all the way through the shot. I feel more “stuck” when I am not facing the target and my motion feels like it gets caught up. 4) Hands lower on the club. I close the club face. Low takeaway – 8 o’clock to 4 o’clock, tick tock. |
Three Keys to Chipping with Jocelyn Jones
1) Confidence – know the shot you want to hit. You’ve got the shot you need in your bag and you’ve been practicing it.
2) Choose the club and commit to it. There are a lot of different shots you can hit with the same club, so make sure you are committed to that particular club and the type of shot you want to hit – before you hit it.
3) Trust yourself and your decision. Keep your head down and follow through.
Bottom Line: It’s fun to hit the big stick and swing away, so definitely keep doing it. If your goal is lower scores, however, take Stephenson’s advice and work on your short game – and keep Jones’ three keys to chipping in mind!
