The United States Golf Association announces that the nomination deadline for the Joe Dey Award has been extended to October 29. This award seeks to recognize people who embody what makes the game so special. Presented annually since 1996, the Joe Dey Award recognizes an individual’s meritorious service to the game as a volunteer.
The award is named in honor of Joseph C. Dey Jr., who served as the USGA’s executive director from 1934-69 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975. The public is encourage to take the time to personally nominate someone you feel is deserving of this distinguished award.
In 2001, Bill Dickey (1928-2012), founder of the National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association (now known as the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association) and former President of the Western States Golf Association, became the first African American to receive the award. Pearl Carey was a recipient in 2005, becoming just the second female and second African American to receive the Dey Award. Carey was a past president of the Western States Golf Association and the Pacific Women’s Golf Association, which serves some 300 public golf clubs in Northern California.
