June 18, 2020 — His first name, Kamaiu (pronounced Kuh-MY-you) is of African origin and means “Silent Warrior”. Standing 6’1″ tall and 155-pounds, Johnson strikes the ball with pure power and averages 310-yards off the tee.
Johnson survived a troubled upbringing and has persevered to become one of the Advocates Pro Golf Association (APGA) Tour’s biggest stars. After Johnson dropped out of school, Jan Auger, General Manager of the Hilaman Park Golf Course in Tallahassee, Florida, offered to let him play with borrowed clubs for $1.00 a round.
Johnson has several other Tallahassee-and Florida A&M-based mentors who have had a major influence on his life. Early on he was a top-tier youth baseball player. Johnson turned pro in golf in 2014 and has won five times on a variety of mini-tours. In 2019, Johnson finished tenth in the APGA Tour Lexus Cup standings.
Johnson now works with a number of HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) throughout the state of Florida. His most recent mentee was a top finisher in the National Minority Collegiate Golf Championships (now the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship).
Johnson is one of two Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour (APGT) players to receive this year a multi-year sponsorship deal from Farmers Insurance®. Farmers is one of the nation’s largest insurer groups providing customers a wide variety of home, life, specialty, commercial and auto insurance products and services. The other sponsorship recipient is APGA Tour player Willie Mack III.
African American Golfer’s Digest reporter Walil Archer talks with Johnson about his career and future goals.
