The LIV Golf circuit returned to the US with a stop in Tulsa, Ok. The opening round May 12, 2023 contested at Cedar Ridge Country Club saw an enthusiastic gallery estimated at over 11,000 turn out to follow established stars like Phil Mickelson and Bryson Dechambeau, however the largest draw was consecutive LIV Golf winner Talor Gooch. Gooch who played collegiately at Oklahoma State University along with four other LIV Golf members comes to Tulsa on a hot streak as he won the LIV Golf Adelaide and Singapore events. Early estimates from the attendance at the Tulsa event are trending towards Tulsa becoming the most successful attended event on US soil.
The day belonged to Branden Grace as he shot a course record tying 61. Grace holds the record for lowest single-round score in a men’s major with a score of 62 carded at the 2017 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The 9 birdies on the day shot by Grace were matched by Dustin Johnson, however Johnson’s round had some up and down moments that left him with a score of 63 in a tie for second place with Brendan Steele. Bubba Watson finished round one in 7th place with a score of 4 under par, and his RangeGoats GC teammate Harold Varner III is in a logjam of 8 players at -3 in 10th place.
Day 2 of the 54 hole event is anticipating even larger crowds.
