LoveVell Higgs

by Debert Cook

LoveVell Higgs has a name that is as true to life as she is.  Born in Kansas and raised in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Higgs counts her blessings and always keeps an eye out for opportunity.  She never leaves a stone unturned and enthusiastically has a word of advice to those who wish to take up the game of golf.

LoveVellFlag4Higgs always had an interest in learning how to play golf and following the urgings of a colleague, six-years ago, she accepted an invitation and attended a class that was being affordably offered at the Cascade Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga.  The rest is history and her life has never been the same.

“When I lived in Atlanta, I had several different groups of people that I would play with.  I found myself always playing with men, which is one of the main reasons I started The Pink Tee Foundation.  I believe that if African American girls are introduced to the game at an earlier age, we will see more of them on the course as women, and eventually on the LPGA Tour. Now that I am living in Dallas (TX), I play golf most often with my cousins.  Golf has brought us together after many years,” says Higgs.

As Founder and President of The Pink Tee Foundation, a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt non-profit organization that she started two years ago, she is making a positive impact on young girls.  The foundation has a web presence at PinkTeeGolf.com.  It is dedicated to building character and developing leadership that enhances life skills amongst disadvantaged girls between the ages of 8-18 through the game of golf.

“Pink Tee knows that every child can be a leader and achieve their goals if given a positive road map to follow,” states Higgs on their website.  “Through Pink Tee girls not only learn the game of golf, but also learn how to handle various life challenges that they face daily through peer pressure.”

Being on the course and having proper instruction is what helps golfers gain better control over their game.  Higgs knows the benefits of professional training and she has taken part in the women’s classes offered at Cedar Crest G.C., working closely with Mualana Dotch, a certified LPGA and PGA Teaching Professional. Dotch is a leader in her industry and has been in the golf business for nearly 10 years.  She is currently the Director of Instruction at Cedar Crest Golf Course. “Any lessons that I take, I always try to focus on my short game,” Higgs states.

Although Higgs’ game handicap is not exactly where she wants it to be—just yet—her aspirations are high and she knows that more practice means better scores for her.

An attractive, 5’ 5” tall bachelorette who maintains a demanding schedule, Higgs enjoys seafood and traveling (and always takes her clubs with her).  With lots of activity happening, she keeps a cute skort or golf dress handy for on the course, and a stylish dress for off the course.  To manage her medium-length hair she wears it in layers with golden blonde highlights. Higgs admits: “It is important that my “future” significant other also plays golf. I spend way too much time playing and teaching the game for him to not have an interest.”  –Well fellas, for the record, you now know for sure what leads Ms. Higgs’ checklist of must-haves.

LoveVellHiggs-3Higgs attended the University of Oklahoma and worked in marketing and advertising before starting The Pink Tee Foundation. She is very familiar with the rigors of  juggling work, social activities and maintaining a quality personal life.

The Pink Tee Foundation holds classes at two locations in the state: Oak Hollow Golf Course in McKinney, Texas and at Cedar Crest G.C. in Dallas.  Moving at lightening speed during its first year, over 30 young girls were impacted with lessons and the Foundation launched after school programs that partnered with the Roseland Boys and Girls Club and Nova Academy.

“Running a girl’s golf program takes up a lot of my time.  But golf is also very relaxing when I’m stressed.  My home course in Cedar Crest G.C. in Dallas, and I enjoy playing there.  Every round is a new challenge and a new adventure.  In my heart and mind I know I should be better, and I refuse to let a little white ball defeat me!”
