Major Winner “Not Surprised” on Tiger Woods Turning Down Ryder Cup Captaincy

by AAGD Staff

Tiger Woods, 48, was reportedly in line to succeed Zach Johnson as captain for Team USA at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. However, Woods opted out, citing his significant commitments in helping the PGA Tour negotiate a deal with LIV Golf’s financiers as a reason to reduce his overall responsibilities as captain.

Woods mentioned that ongoing negotiations to unify the elite men’s game were a stumbling block in his decision. Instead, Keegan Bradley has been named the U.S. skipper and is set to hold his first press conference later today (Tuesday). Former Open champion Stewart Cink says he is not surprised, according to Telegraph Sport.

Bradley’s selection, seen as a surprising choice, has sparked debate about whether it’s a risky move. Nonetheless, the 38-year-old’s fiery personality is expected to energize the home crowd at Bethpage Black. Before Bradley’s appointment, it was anticipated that either Stewart Cink or former Masters champion Fred Couples would lead Team USA if Woods declined the role. Cink expressed no surprise at Woods’ decision, commenting, “Since he’s stepped into the board position, the PGA Tour is pretty busy right now, and he’s got a lot going on with his injuries and recovery. He wants to play. It’s probably a pretty big role when you consider adding it to all that stuff.” What are the golf odds of this ever happening?

Bradley, a six-time PGA Tour winner, has participated in two Ryder Cups, albeit on the losing side both times. Notably, he vowed not to open his return luggage from the 2012 Cup at Medinah until he was a winner in the biennial competition. His exclusion from the team last September was controversial, especially given his excellent form. Instead, Johnson chose Justin Thomas, despite his subpar performance, leading to accusations of favoritism within the U.S. team.

Speculation continues that Woods might captain the U.S. team when the Ryder Cup heads to Adare Manor in Ireland for the 2027 contest, marking the 100th anniversary of the first Ryder Cup. Adare Manor is owned by Woods’ friend JP McManus. The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 26-28.
