During the Pro-Am event at the Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – Florida, two young and aspiring golfers, Makenna Rodriguez and Leiahnni Smith, had the extraordinary opportunity to tee it up alongside LET (Ladies European Tour) professional, Johanna Gustavsson from Sweden. Johanna Gustavsson, who secured third place in the 2022 Race to Costa del Sol and led the winning team in New York the previous year, was a source of inspiration and knowledge for these budding golfers.

Joining the Pro-Am team alongside Gustavsson was Vasti Amaro, an Advisory Board Member for Women of Color Golf (WOCG). This event provided a unique platform for all three players to represent not only the WOCG organization but also their mentoring initiative, Girls on the Green Tee (GOTGT).

GOTGT, conceived by the WOCG, is a program specifically designed for girls aged 10-17, aimed at introducing them to the world of golf. Beyond the sport, the program strives to nurture leadership skills and instill values such as self-esteem, confidence, respect, honesty, responsibility, and a commitment to healthy habits and experiences.

Clemmie Perry, the Founder and executive Director of WOCG and GOTGT, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity afforded to the minority students who participated in the LET Pro-Am at the Aramco Team Series – Florida. She noted that the experience was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and conveyed the girls’ gratitude to Alexandra Armas and the ATS–Florida team for their involvement.

“We appreciate the opportunity for Girls on the Green Tee to play in the Aramco Team Series PRO AM to inspire generations of women and girls to follow their dreams and achieve their full potential. It was an incredible once in a lifetime,” said Perry in a Facebook post.

Leiahnni, a College Women of Color Golf Ambassador from Edward Waters University, described the event as an incredible experience, allowing her to witness a golf tournament from the other side of the spectator ropes. She praised Johanna Gustavsson’s engaging personality and the invaluable tips and advice she received from her during the game. Leiahnni eagerly anticipated the remainder of the week with a newfound appreciation for the sport.

Makenna, another participant in the Pro-Am, expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside a professional LET player, especially one as gracious and inspiring as Johanna. The experience not only provided insights into the game but also the mindset required to succeed as an athlete and a woman in the field of golf.

Adding to the memorable occasion was the presence of Makenna’s sister, Morgan, who was invited to walk aloLeiahnni Smithmangside and experience the round with Johanna. Morgan found the experience surreal, as it allowed her to gain an insight into the challenges and strategies faced by professional golfers. She commended Johanna’s expertise and personality, emphasizing the value of the experience. Morgan considered herself fortunate to share her aspirations with the pro and to receive valuable tips during the round.

The Pro-Am at the Aramco Team Series – Florida provided a remarkable opportunity for young golfers to learn from and be inspired by a seasoned LET professional. The event underscored the commitment of organizations like WOCG and GOTGT to empower and nurture the next generation of female golfers while promoting values that extend far beyond the greens. The day was marked not only by golfing wisdom but by the enduring spirit of mentorship and camaraderie.
