During the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, being played this week at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, PA, October 8-11, World Long Drive Champion Troy Mullins caught up with LPGA golfer Mariah Stackhouse, as she prepared for the event, and the two discussed a topic dear to both of them: Growing diversity and inclusion in the game for women.

As the only active Black athlete on the LPGA Tour, Maria is “lone, but not alone” on the course, as a throng of fans follows her every move on-and-off of the golf course. In her aspirations, she has succeeded in being a Tour player and her name has become legendary. With the fame and recognition, she also hopes to accomplish even more and aims that with each stroke of the club to inspire more girls to follow in her footsteps.

During the interview, Mullins remarks about Mariah’s feature on the LPGA “Drive On” campaign. Excited about the opportunity, Mariah shares with Mullins on how incredible the experience was for her, having a voice and being a part of the narrative of the Tour.

To inspire more diversity in golf, Mariah says she thinks that sharing her platform will bring more inclusion to the game and help more juniors matriculate to the Tour.

“I think just us using our platform to show that we’re out here and playing golf, and to hopefully, uh, then have that inspire the younger generation to pick it up in even greater numbers and to start to see more and more of us matriculate to the junior circuit, the amateur circuit and that’s how we end up out here,” says Mariah.

What makes golf incredibly special?

Mariah says that “golf is a great sport for young women because it offers the opportunity to be both competitive and social at the same time. Being out on the golf course for a few hours with playing partners gives one the opportunity to build friendships and bonds.” Her own experience is witness to that. View the full interview below
