A Blog by Micaa’ Thomas
As the former 2017 Maryland State Golf Association’s (MSGA) Amateur Tournament Champion, in the Second Flight, I decided to compete in the 2018 MSGA Amateur Championship, at the Worthington Manor Golf, Club, in Urbana, Maryland, during the week of July 16-19, 2018. Cheryl Thomas, my mother, served as my Caddie and both of us agreed that the course presented numerous challenges. Scoring well in most cases was based on the bounce and roll of your ball, because you could end up in difficult positions to get to the greens which have hard to maneuver angulations that demand a precise putting touch for scoring. This type of course is exactly the challenge I needed to elevate my game to new heights. The weather was extremely radiant with nearly 100-degree temperatures, so staying hydrated was crucial for me.
The MSGA Amateur Tournament Championship was a four-day event in which I opened with stroke play on the first day and a non-elimination round of match play for flight placement on the second day. This year, I was elevated to the First Flight in the MSGA tournament. The third day of competition was extremely grueling, because it required the golfers to play two rounds of match play. I avoided elimination twice, successfully in two rounds, to convincingly win and advanced to the finals. During the championship round, my opponent and I were evenly matched in our level of play on this difficult course. I fought hard and was relentless in forcing my competitor to the 17th hole to become Runner-up in the tournament. My mother and my father (Michael) were very proud of my level of fight and tenacity to be unyielding throughout the tournament.
What’s Next?
Next, I can use your help specifically with golf-related expenses which are tax-deductible to compete on August 11-12, 2018, at the Golf Channel Amateur Tour Championship at the Seaview Resort in Galloway, New Jersey. The projected cost entails Registration $295.00, Hotel $300, and Gas $80.00 for a total of $675. I hope you will help me with these monetary needs.
Creative Art and Golf are my True- Life Passions
I proudly participated in the Bill Dickey Golf Scholarship Program in Atlanta, Georgia, the Langston’s Boys and Girls Golf Program in DC, and the First Tee Program of Greater Washington, DC, where I was successful at Pebble Beach with the “Shot of Day” and featured in Sports Illustrated.
Academically, I attained National Honor Society, National Honor Art Society status and was the Art Program’s Vice President. Cheryl Thomas, my mother, has always been my caddie and supplemental coach and my father, Michael Thomas, has been the supporter behind the scene. Jokingly, he always says, he is the set-up crew, security monitor and public relations representative.
In preparation for College at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Atlanta, Georgia, I knew I had to focus on my academics since I was majoring in Visual Effects and 3D Animation. I also had to transition to collegiate competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In my freshman year, we had a winning season and I was the first freshman at SCAD to win the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship (AAC) and as a team, we placed fourth in the NAIA National Championship which was SCAD’s first.
