The Benedict College Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed six new members on Thursday, October 24, during a prestigious Hall of Fame Dinner held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Columbia, South Carolina. Among the inductees was Montrele Wells Sr., a distinguished member of the HBCU Minority Golf Championship-winning 2004 Men’s Golf Team.
Hosted and sponsored by the Benedict College Athletic Department, the event honored athletes and coaches who have left a lasting legacy at the college. Wells, now residing in Jacksonville, Florida, has played golf for 23 years, a journey that began at Benedict and led him to remarkable accomplishments, including becoming a professional golfer and now a Hall of Famer.
“The game has given me opportunities that without it I may not have had. I love everything golf has taught me and the places it has taken me,” Wells reflected. Despite playing less frequently in the past year and a half, he estimates his handicap to be around 2 and remains confident in his ability to keep his game sharp.
His induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his evolution from a college beginner to a national champion, professional golfer, and now a mentor to the next generation. Currently serving as the Director of Player Development and Player Relations for the APGA Tour, Wells is dedicated to growing the game and supporting young professionals.
Beyond golf, Wells is deeply rooted in family and community. He has been married to his wife, Quemaki, for over ten years, and together they have two energetic children, Madysan (6) and Montrele Jr. (3). His daughter is involved in gymnastics, while his son enjoys running. Outside of golf, Wells enjoys music and plays the drums at The Dayspring Church in Jacksonville, Florida.
Reflecting on his induction, Wells cherished the presence of his family and the honor of receiving the award and the official Hall of Fame jacket. “The Dinner was great, but having my family there to see it and knowing that I will be in the Benedict College Athletic Hall of Fame forever means the most to me,” he shared.
