This week marked a major milestone at Detroit Golf Club as the storied North Course officially broke ground on a multi-million-dollar restoration project. The work, launched just after the conclusion of the 2025 Rocket Classic, is slated for completion in time for the 2026 edition of the tournament, scheduled for July 27–August 2.

The project, budgeted at approximately $16 million, is being led by golf architect Tyler Rae, who is drawing heavily from the original 1914 plans by legendary course designer Donald Ross. The restoration includes rebuilding bunkers, reshaping greens, improving drainage and irrigation systems, and removing certain trees to both preserve historical integrity and enhance playability. The course will also be lengthened by about 200 yards, with adjustments to dozens of holes—including expanding green surfaces and restoring strategic bunkering.

Founded in 1899 and home to 36 holes designed by Donald Ross, Detroit Golf Club has hosted the Rocket Classic since 2019. The North Course, serving as the main venue for the tournament, will showcase a renewed, historically sensitive design that blends Ross’s classic bunkering, mound work, and original routed layout with modern agronomic standards.

Bruce Pruitt, recently appointed COO and general manager, will oversee the renovation efforts. He highlighted the club’s enthusiasm, saying the entire team is “inspiring to see … as we work to improve our course to enhance our member golfing experience”.

As the North Course transforms, Detroit Golf Club looks toward a refreshed future—one that honors its deep heritage and positions the club to host exceptional tournaments and member play for decades to come.

Michele Samuels, who has made history as the first Black woman president of Detroit Golf Club, is bringing a fresh vision and energetic leadership to the century-old institution. With over a decade of membership since joining in 2012, she steps into the role at a pivotal moment, just after the club’s acclaimed hosting of the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the groundbreaking for the North Course restoration.

Samuels retired in January as senior vice president, general auditor, and compliance officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, where she dedicated 35 years. Her leadership experience and deep roots in Detroit’s community are seen as major assets as the club enters a new era. Her presidency comes amid increased efforts around diversity and inclusion within the club and broader Detroit golf community.
