National Black Golf Month in April Hopes To Spur Growth of the Game Among Black Americans

by Debert Cook

New York, NY, March 1, 2015—The African American Golfer’s Digest, the nations leading print publication and online portal for avid Black golfers and a PGA of America Diverse Supplier, is reminding golfers that April is National Black Golf Month.  The fourth year for the celebration, the National Black Golf Month (NBGM) campaign urges Black Americans to expose another person to the sport.  The initiative, launched in 2011, spans the entire month of April as an incentive to continue to grow the game among African Americans.

“Our desire is to have African Americans throughout our great country exposed to this wonderful game that can be played for a lifetime.  Golf is the fastest growing sport among our demographic and by declaring April as National Black Golf Month we hope to see citizens, young and old, in all of our communities and at all income levels become involved in this game that is a primed and ready for us to grow our participation numbers,” says Ms. Cook, who has published the national print publication during its twelve years.

“It is our hope that during the month of April, Black Americans who already play the game will reach out to another person who does not play, and invite them to come out to a local course to experience a golf clinic or introduction to the game,” says Cook. “The activity is ideal for locating and developing business relationships.”

In 2013, The World Golf Foundation’s Golf 20/20 report estimated the golf industry as a $68.8 billion industry whose total economic impact equates to $176.8 billion.

Appointed to the helm for this year’s campaign is Verda Lyons, Director of National Programs. Lyons oversees programs and relationship development for the outings, clinics, events, and other FREE offerings related to NBGM that are being scheduled across the country.

“This is an open invitation, regardless of ethnicity or social base to all golf clubs, organizations, industries, communities and political leaders nationwide to help propel our effort in raising awareness of golf among African Americans,” says Ms. Lyons who is also President of her own firm, Par Tee Golf Event Management in Long Beach, CA.

According to a Professor of History at New York University Jeffrey Sammons, “Blacks are a vanishing breed at almost every level except recreationally–hence consumers–where we constitute approximately 1.3 million out of some 25.7 million golfers.  And when one visits a golf course these numbers low participation are strongly evident.
