In a power move that underscores their commitment to leaving an indelible mark on the sports world, the Antetokounmpo brothers have stepped onto the greens. Giannis, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo, all accomplished athletes in their own right, recently announced their investment in the Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC), a move that has turned heads in the sporting world.
With three of the five Nigerian-Greek siblings drafted into the NBA, the Antetokounmpo family has already solidified their presence in professional basketball. Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas have all left their mark on the NBA, with three NBA championship titles between them. Kostas secured a championship win with the LA Lakers in 2020, while Thanasis and Giannis clinched victory with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.
However, their aspirations extend beyond the basketball court. The Antetokounmpo brothers made waves when they became minority investors in the Major League Soccer club Nashville SC, a move driven by their deep-rooted passion for soccer.
Giannis shared his excitement about the venture, saying, “My father was a professional soccer player, and it was the first sport I fell in love with in Greece. I’ve always had the dream of owning a soccer team. When my brothers and I explored Nashville SC, we knew it was a team and a city that we wanted to get involved with.”
The news was first shared Tuesday, August 29, over Twitter, where Giannis posted, “We want to make golf our own and for everybody,” adding, “We couldn’t be more excited to shape the future of this sport.”
Now, the brothers are taking their boundless energy and enthusiasm to the world of golf. They’ve joined forces with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL golf league to invest in the inaugural LAGC team. This tech-infused league aims to revolutionize golf by infusing innovation into the game, with “18 players competing as three-person teams in a series of 18-hole matches.”
The Antetokounmpo brothers are now part of an illustrious ownership group that includes tennis legends Venus Williams and Serena Williams, along with Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian and their daughters Olympia Ohanian Jr. and Adira River Ohanian. Notably, Olympia and Adira have made history as the youngest owners of two professional sports teams.
TGL has big plans on the horizon, having partnered with TMRW Sports and the PGA Tour for 15 regular season matches set to kick off in January 2024. The Antetokounmpo brothers, fueled by their father’s memory and their own aspirations, are thrilled to embark on this new golfing adventure.
Thanasis summed up their vision beautifully, saying, “We want to make golf our own and for everybody. I know [our dad would] be so proud of us today, that this is happening. It’s not just the investment part of it. There’s a part of it that’s a legacy, that for us, it’s for generations to come that we’re part of this.”
With this latest move, the Antetokounmpo brothers are not just leaving their mark on the greens; they’re shaping the future of golf.
