In 1991, the P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program was established by the USGA with the aim of offering valuable experience to individuals aspiring to pursue a career in golf administration. Simultaneously, the program aids state and regional golf associations in advancing amateur golf on a short-term, entry-level basis.
Internship experiences vary since the requirements differ among associations. Interns may contribute to tasks such as organizing tournaments, managing junior golf programs, handling membership services, and engaging in other activities that support the overall welfare of golf. Opportunities for multiple summer employments are also a possibility.
A common element woven throughout the internship is exposure to tournament preparations, administration, and post-tournament activities. The challenges of tournament administration assess an individual’s patience, initiative, decision-making skills, and capacity to endure prolonged hours and strenuous efforts.
Individuals ineligible for hire include golf professionals, USGA employees or their relatives, USGA committee members or their relatives, and employees or officials of associations and organizations, along with their relatives.
Prospective interns are expected to showcase robust managerial potential and a genuine interest in golf. Golf associations participating in the Internship Program commit to providing an appropriate orientation, ongoing training, and attention. Interns become employees of the respective golf association, which assumes primary responsibility for recruitment, as well as exclusive responsibility for compensation and supervision. Following the program’s completion, evaluations are submitted by both the association and the intern to the USGA.
