It was a grand celebration for PGA/LPGA legend Renee Powell and her brother, Golf Course Superintendent Larry Powell, when the Powell family received the Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) on February 6, 2019. The organization’s highest honor is usually presented to an individual and this award makes for the first time the presentation has honored a family. The presentation took place in a ceremony at the San Diego at the Golf Industry Show.
Larry Powell has been a member of the GCSAA member since 1971. At the historic Clearview Golf Course, he is the person who maintains the course in East Canton, Ohio, keeping the grounds in shape and looking beautiful. Clearview is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Powells are continuing the legacy of their late father, William Powell, who seeded the first nine holes by hand back in 1942.
Clearview is now 71-years old. “Once you visit, you will never forget it and will want to return,” said Denny on his Facebook post.
