Raymond Worthy, 77, of Union, SC, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2023, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. A native of Union, SC, he was the son of the late John W. Worthy and the late Lillar Mae Boyd Worthy.
Raymond was a graduate of Sims High School, class of 1964. He furthered his education at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. Raymond was employed for many years as a computer technician with Bon Secours Hospital in Charleston, SC. He faithfully served his country for 4 years in the US Army with one tour in Germany.
As a youth, he attended Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church. He was also one of the original members of the “Royal Knights” (young men’s social club). As a teenager, he would earn money by caddying at the Union Country Club, which inspired him to golf through adulthood until it became more enjoyable to watch it on television. He would switch channels between watching golf and tennis.
Raymond was an avid reader, especially, the newspapers keeping abreast of the world’s events and daily solving the crossword puzzles and “Jumbles”. He was an excellent “Scrabble” player, until Armanda started beating him; then, he quit playing. When Raymond moved back to Union from Charleston, he developed great gardening skills under the tutelage of his dear Mother and reading various gardening books and Southern Living magazine.
At Thanksgiving, one of his most enjoyable activities was spending time with his nieces and nephews by taking them on exploration hikes in the open fields across from the family home. They would always return home exhausted and complaining about “Uncle Ray” walked us too much in the bushes and climbing up hills. Raymond became an excellent caretaker of his Mother when her health began to decline. He took great pleasure in preparing her breakfast each morning and being available whenever she needed something including gathering the ingredients when she baked those delicious “Lemon Pound Cakes”. Raymond will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Colonel Horace Worthy of Burke, VA and Alvin (Pop) Worthy of the home.
He is survived by one brother, Otis W. Worthy (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC; four sisters, Dorothy G. Worthy of Stone Mountain, GA, Dianne W. Spencer (Mike) of Carlisle, SC, Armanda W. Jeter of the home, and Joyce Ann Worthy-Wilson (Danny) of Stone Mountain, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially, his best friend since eighth grade, Wayne Allen Nichols of Taylors, SC.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Community Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to Community Mortuary, Inc., 361 Meansville Road, Union, SC.
