Another great happening is in the works for our annual escape to the beautifully rustic Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard. The “Vineyard”, as it is commonly called, has a storied African American history that traces back decades, to an era when Blacks were not permitted on many other American beaches, so they created a place of their ‘own’.

The island of Martha’s Vineyard sits in the Atlantic just south of Cape Cod and is filled with harbor towns, lighthouses, sandy beaches, bars and eateries, and more. Throngs of African Americans visit the island during August to enjoy the endless natural beauty of golden sunrises and sunsets, with activities to keep you busy such as boating, fishing, art galleries, jazz festivals, comedy fests, church services, and more…and, of course, golf!
With a total of 124.6 miles of tidal shoreline (spread over six small towns) the Vineyard is only accessible only by boat or air. Vineyard Haven, on the eastern end, is a ferry port and the island’s commercial center. Oak Bluffs has Carpenter Gothic cottages and an iconic carousel along with Mink Meadows and Farm Neck golf courses, with several more great courses across the Vineyard Sound in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
