Selina Johnson

Selina Johnson is the Founder/President /CEO of the Hollywood Golf Institute. She is a native Detroiter and mother of two, Jamila & Norris.  Johnson motivates youth by changing their climate of thinking through GOLF.

The Hollywood Golf Institute was founded in 1980 and incorporated in 1984 in Detroit, Michigan.  It is a non-profit organization, whose mission is to introduce urban, minority youth to the sport of golf and its inherent aspects for discipline, patience, goal setting, personal achievement, communication and networking with fellow golfers.  “Our goals is to utilize golf as an alternative educational opportunity for boys and girls, says Johnson.”

Johnson piloted her youth golfing program by implementing it principles on her daughter.  As a result, Jamila attended college on a full scholarship at Jackson State University.  Johnson’s love for children and the desire to see them have equal education opportunities, has allowed many metropolitan youth to compete in golf tournaments across the country, as well as obtain scholarships.  Johnson and The Hollywood Golf Institute have gained national and international acclaim for their dedication to providing golf education and knowledge of the game to youth ages 4-17, as well as college students.

Today, Johnson’s students compete at local, national, and collegiate levels.  Over 26 colleges are scouting the program.  Johnson and the Hollywood Golf Institute have inspired over 5,000 students with life learning skills.  The program has developed and hosted remarkable golf workshops and camps for participants as young as three years old.  “It is my relationship with the parents of my students and my hard working devoted staff that has made my program successful,” says Johnson.  To date her program has provided golf education to over 100 Detroit area schools.  Johnson has continued to embody the ideas of patience, perseverance, and great imagination.

Her most notable round for golf was with comedian Bob Hope, along with television appearances with PGA Tour members, Calvin Peete, Lee Elder, Arnold Palmer, and Curtis Strange.  In addition, the children of Detroit, will never forget the HGI Clinic featuring Tiger Woods.

Through her hard and dedication, Johnson is the proud recipient of the Michigan Chronicle’s Women of Excellence (2014), Michigan African American Hall of Fall (1997), The African American Golfer’s Digest Outstanding Leaders In Golf Award (2008), The African American’s Hall of Fame (2005), The Budget Rent-A-Car Coaches Award- National Women’s Sports Foundation, PGA Tour Card Walker Award, The Cool Achievers Award, The Jefferson Award, The Coalition of 100 Women in Sports Award, Hartford B.C. Sports Woman of the Year Award, Former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer’s  Outstanding Achievement Award and the KEY to the City (Kansas City, Missouri) Juneteenth Celebration Award.  Johnson is a member of Christian Temple B.C. When asked who the inspiration in life is, she responded, “My family has played a significant role, but my truth and light is God”.
